The end of any relationship is a difficult time for anyone regardless for the reasons why the relationship has come to an end.

However your marriage or relationship has come to an end, there are certain things you can do to try and avoid additional pain when going through the divorce or separation process.

  • Ensure you have a good support system around you- a friendly shoulder to cry on should it be needed. If you feel that seeing a counsellor or therapist would help, do so.
  • Get legal advice on the options as soon as possible. We often see people who are worried they will be left with nothing, and often an initial session with a solicitor to clarify the process and options can alleviate those worries, arm you with information as to what the options are, and give you the opportunity to properly think through how you want to proceed.
  • Consider all options available to you- there is no pressure to say you have to divorce straight away unless the other party has issued proceedings already. If you do decide to divorce, there are a number of ways in which you can resolve the financial aspects of your divorce including negotiation, mediation, arbitration or where necessary, the court process. Your solicitor can discuss all of these options to enable you to decide how best to deal with the matters in your case.
  • Try to keep the lines of communication between you and your former spouse amicable and polite if at all possible. We know this is a difficult one, but communication really can be key. Being able to work together towards settlement, even if only through solicitors, not only avoids the additional stress of a ‘battle’, but also can save costs in terms of legal fees and time in the court process.
  • And most importantly, do not panic! There is no doubt it will be a trying time for you, but you will come out the other side and with good advice, will be able to begin the next chapter of your life.
