Holiday periods such as the long summer holidays, Christmas or Easter are for many people, fun family times full of happiness and tradition. But for some, they are the opposite of fun, particularly those experiencing family breakdown or facing their first holiday period as a single parent. Here are our top tips for coping:
- Be proactive – make your own new traditions. Plenty of people are alone and may relish the suggestion to share a meal or go for a walk;
- Keep lines of communication open – liaise well in advance as to where the children will be. If the children are old enough, ask them what they would like to do – children can have remarkably good ideas!
- Relax – make the most of the break from work and everyday stress. Take the opportunity to catch up on some sleep and do some exercise. Treat yourself to a long soak, enjoy some TV or invite friends over to socialise.
When times are hard, remember that things can only get better. Try not to dwell on things and you could surprise yourself by how well you cope.
