Planning for Christmas during COVID restrictions – the impact on children.

As we approach Christmas, thoughts naturally turn to what plans to make, and whether we will be able to see family and friends over the Christmas period. At the time of writing, we are currently in the extended lockdown which is due to be revisited in early December, and there continues to be uncertainty as to what restrictions will be in place over the Christmas period.

This may be causing additional concern for separated parents (and their wider family members) as to whether they will be able to see their children, and parents will no doubt be having discussions as to what arrangements should be put in place. There will no doubt also be concerns over what other, extended family members or friends may be able to be involved in the arrangements.

Since the initial lockdown in March, the position has been made clear that it remains acceptable for children to move between two households for the purposes of spending time with the other parent (except where they are self-isolating) and that should therefore continue over the Christmas period. The question however remains as to what level of mingling with other households will be acceptable, and that is a question which will have to be answered by the Government in due course once information is released about what restrictions will be in place over that time.

Naturally, some parents may have difficulties in reaching agreement, perhaps where they have different ideas as to what risk level is acceptable. However, the main focus needs to be on the children and what is in their best interest.

Parents will undoubtedly need to be more flexible in the arrangements this year, given the added uncertainty as to the restrictions. However if a plan can be put in place, it may assist both parents and children in managing their expectations and reacting to any changing restrictions.
