A Law Commission consultation paper has recently been published considering some issues couples may face when looking to marry.
This consultation is to address the regulations as to where and how people marry, for which there have been calls for reform for some time now. Amongst the proposals are the following:
• A simplified process to arrange a marriage ceremony.
• Wider provision as to who can officiate ceremonies and how that ceremony can be conducted.
• Wider provision as to the locations at which people can marry.
• Greater flexibility for the form of ceremony chosen.
• Consideration of the different beliefs of those marrying.
The consultation is open until 3rd December 2020 with a final report anticipated in the second half of 2021.
More details in relation to the consultation can be found on the law commission website at https://www.lawcom.gov.uk/project/weddings/
